Home movers and improvers:
With restrictions due to Coronavirus, more and more people are feeling the value of having a garden and according to agents Rightmove, access to a garden was a priority for over 60% of buyers looking for a new home. And, according to the Royal Chartered Institute of Surveyors, this number is set to grow. They found that 80% of property professionals expect demand for gardens to increase over the next 2 years.
Landscaping your garden could significantly raise your property value by 77%, according to new research by Post Office Money.
Doing up your garden could add more value to the property than a new kitchen, a conservatory or even an extension, the study shows. Next time you want to add value to your home, consider outdoor enhancements such as planting beautiful new flower beds, adding a sturdy deck, creating a patio, or opting for water features.
Figures released by insurance specialists, AXA, confirm the importance of a well-kept garden, but show a more modest increase in property values. Their research reveals that while the average UK household spent £473 in a year on their gardens, the potential return was more than four times that at £1,954.
Research reveals 50% of Brits believe a well-designed garden is as important or more important than a well-designed bathroom or kitchen.
Nearly half of people (47%) have been put off buying or renting a property because of the condition of the garden
Brits are prepared to pay an average premium of nearly £15,000 for a garden when buying a property.

Adapting for disability / childproofing
Maybe family or work commitments or health problems are preventing you from keeping your garden in the state you’d like. I can advise on ways to make your garden lower maintenance or more accessible, e.g. mulched borders with shrubs instead of flower beds, ramps and rails for those with mobility problems or raised beds if you’re having difficulty bending.
Perhaps your garden needs making more child-friendly or childproof? I can suggest changes that will make the garden safer, yet still exciting for kids, whilst still allowing space for adult use.
To really enhance your garden, you might choose to have a bespoke garden office or summerhouse built, some handcrafted railings or furniture, or a sculpture, some mosaic or glasswork. I know a range of artisans and can help you commission these.
Why not treat your friends and family to some garden design services? Gift vouchers make great wedding or anniversary presents, especially for the couple who already have their full complement of toasters etc. They could use them to have the planting in a border revamped or put them towards a full garden re-design.
