Brief

The fantastic view of the moors from this tiny back garden was obscured by a huge ivy, trellis and a washing post. The lawn was a burden to maintain and the owners felt overlooked by their neighbour, so consequently, they hardly spent any time in their garden. The retaining wall at the back was unsightly and in need of repair. The clients wanted to salvage anything useful, so many plants and brick pavers were re-used.

Rationale

Having visited Yves Saint Laurent’s Majorelle garden in Marrakesh, they liked the idea of a Moroccan-inspired courtyard garden.

End Result

The lawn was taken up and replaced with Indian stone paving to match that closer to the house. The old brick pavers were used as edging. The render on the retaining wall was repaired and painted a deep blue. This colour recedes from the eye, so gives the illusion that the garden is longer. It also acts as a foil to accentuate the planting in front of it. The client chose Moroccan style tiling to decorate this.

The arbour provides a seat to get the evening sun. Once climbers establish over the smaller trellis it will provide more privacy. Plants were selected to give year-round interest, so are mostly evergreen, many are fragrant – (roses, lavender, honeysuckle) and the colours vibrate against the blue walls behind.

Finally, the beds were mulched with bark chip to help reduce the need to water or weed. See the testimonials page to find out how all this changed the way the owners use the garden!

Testimonial

I used to dread coming home during the summer months when our garden was such a mess. Now it’s been transformed I look forward to getting back so I can sit out, admire the view and think what a great decision it was to have it done.

As the plants were very small when Helen planted them, watching them develop has been like having lots of Christmas presents. They are now twice the size and we are looking forward to the buds opening. Like Christmas, the garden is a thing of joy we will get pleasure from every year. And since Helen has chosen plants for all year round interest, the enjoyment will not be confined to one season.
